Why manage fisheries in Marine Protected Areas?

In line with the IFCA remit to achieve healthy seas, sustainable fisheries and a viable industry, we need to understand how fishing activities can affect the marine environment. Where necessary, we need to manage fishing to reduce impacts on target species (fish and shellfish stocks) and/or non-target species, and impacts on habitats. This is particularly important in areas that are designated for the protection of certain species and habitats – collectively known as marine protected areas.
