How can we protect seals?

  • Seals are very sensitive to disturbance and when startled may flee into the water, causing pups to be separated from their mothers and get injured.
  • Maintain 100m from seals at all times and ensure that dogs are kept on leads around areas where seals are hauled out.
  • They have been known to bite humans and dogs when cornered and they can carry diseases which can be spread through these bites.
  • Disturbance can impact the animals energy reserves and is particularly damaging during the sensitive season from June – August when pups are especially vulnerable and dependent on their mothers.
  • Seals and other marine life can become entangled in litter and lost fishing gear, please be mindful of leaving the coastline how you found it and picking up your litter.
  • Do not attempt to return a seal to the sea, they are often hauled out to rest and conserve energy.
