Cromer Pot Tagging Initiative FAQs

Why were the tags selected?

The tag selected is the Shearwell Plastic Set Tag, which was selected following a successful tag trial funded by the WWF. They were favoured due to their ease of affixing, as well as their durability and low cost compared with other tags. Use of pot tags in the MCZ is currently a voluntary measure but will be required under the Cromer Shoal Chalk Beds MCZ Byelaw 2023 when it comes into effect. Funding was secured last year to purchase tags ahead of this requirement to be used on a voluntary basis. A quantity of tags has been purchased through the funding with some reserves, to allow pots to be interchanged inside and out of the MCZ and to be replaced if damaged or lost for an amount of time. Each tag should be fixed and will not need to be replaced unless lost or damaged.

How should the tags be affixed to pots?
The tags can be easily affixed using the applicator and instructions provided. One tag should be affixed to each pot. Tags should be fixed to a secure and readable location on the pot and it is recommended that they are fixed within the parlor of the pot as trials have indicated that the tags are kept clean and legible by the movement of catch. As per the agreement pots are required to be tagged at the earliest opportunity.

Will there be any other marking requirements?
The byelaw will require that each end of a string is marked with buoys which must have either the PLN of the vessel or the Permit number written on them in such a way that it is clearly visible. For recreational vessels (without a PLN), the buoys must be marked with the associated permit number.

Do I need to replace my tags each year?
No, there is no requirement for annual tag replacement under the byelaw. Tags will only need to be replaced if they become lost, broken or illegible.

Can you transfer tags to another vessel or skipper?
No, tags cannot be transferred to other vessels or people. Tags are assigned to a person and vessel so that the owner of the pots can be identified.

If tags are lost or broken how have can more be requested?
Tags will need to be replaced if they become lost, broken or illegible.  In order to request further tags, you should contact Eastern IFCA via the contact details below as soon as possible. When the byelaw comes into effect, replacement tags will have to be paid for by the permit holder unless the Authority has any surplus from the voluntary roll-out.
