The ARM Approach

What is Adaptive Risk Management (ARM)?

Adaptive management is considered as ‘learning by doing’ then adapting based on that learning (JNCC, 2019). Such management provides a framework for managing ecosystems where there are multiple sources of uncertainty (Williams and Brown, 2018) allowing evidence based, proportionate and participatory management to be developed through an iterative process, where monitoring and research inform management in a feedback loop (JNCC, 2019). Thus, ARM requires the implementation of management proportionate to the risk identified, and adequately precautionary, followed by a process of evaluation and refinement of that management.
