Cromer Shoal Chalk Bed Interim measures confirmed

As part of the management of crab and lobster potting within the Cromer Shoal Chalk Beds Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ), the Authority is bringing into effect two interim measures. Both measures are intended to be temporary and will facilitate the delivery of Adaptive Risk Management of the MCZ.

A consultation was held regarding these measures between 19 February and 20 March 2025. The outcome document for the consultation can be found at the link below. The consultation responses were carefully considered and informed the decision on bringing the measures into effect.

Cromer Shoal Interim Measures Outcome Document

Fisheries positional data

From 0001hrs on 21 April 2025 all beach launched vessels fishing within the MCZ using pots for crab and lobsters must provide location information every 3 minutes.  The Authority will provide electronic monitoring devices which are capable of transmitting this data free of charge.  It is intended that the requirement will be reviewed once national requirements for all under 12m vessels to have I-VMS onboard has come into effect. The full wording of the requirement (including the area the measure applies in) can be found at the link below.

Fisheries Positional Data Requirement

Officers will make the electronic monitoring devices available to any fishermen who may require them during a drop in session at Cromer Seafront (in front of the old lifeboat museum) between 1300 and 1700hrs on Tuesday 15 April 2025. If you think you need a tracker and are not available during this time, please contact the Eastern IFCA office.

Mandatory closure of Natural Disturbance Study areas

The Natural Disturbance Study is a critical element of the Authority’s management of the MCZ. Certain discrete areas are closed to fishing for the purpose of the study by voluntary agreement.  These closures will become mandatory under the Temporary Closure of Shellfish Fisheries Byelaw from 0001hrs on 21 April 2025.

Notices setting out the closed areas can be found at the link below and will be displayed within the Cromer Area.
